Ankle Replacement

Talar Dome Lesion / Osteochondritis Dessicans of the Talar Dome

Ankle replacement has improved dramatically in the past decade. Previous attempts at ankle replacement in the 1960’s and 1970’s failed due to the poor design of the implants. A new series of implants have resulted in better function and improved ability to replace the ankle joint.

Ankle replacement surgery is quite complex and not without risk. The procedure is performed at a hospital setting with a need for one to two nights of stay. The procedure is not for every patient and is reserved for those patients who are ideal candidates. The ideal candidate cannot have deformity or angulation of the ankle, must not be very active and must be at least 55 years old. Although these are the standards developed, many other patients may be candidates with adjustment of lifestyle or their personal needs. Angulation correction prior to implant placement can be performed and activity limitations are constantly improving for ankle replacement.
