A Fine Moment for Sportsmanship: Watch What Happened in the London Marathon!

Last week the London Marathon had over 40,000 competitors in the challenging race.  People from all over world came to participate, but it was a few minutes toward the end of the marathon that got captured by the media in this video:

A runner stopped 300 meters from the finish line to aid “a guy in need”.  Mathew Rees came around the final corner and spotted the struggling runner.  He was weak and disoriented; each time he tried to stand his legs buckled and he sank back to the ground.  Mathew was cheered on by the crowd as he helped David Wyeth to his feet and together they made their way across the finish line.

They received enthusiastic applause from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry who were on hand to cheer runners along the home stretch.

A few hours later on the phone, Mathew was pleased to hear that David was feeling better. He said, “This is what the marathon is about – it’s about people, it’s for everyone. Moments like this make it worth it. I’m just glad he is okay”.

Many of our patients work hard to prepare themselves for marathons. Their bodies take a beating, their feet take a pounding.  We’re glad as well to see one athlete helping another who is down.  Let us know what you think!
