Dr. Sydney Yau knew from an early age that he wanted to care for the sick. The only question was which healing discipline would he chose? The answer came after he shadowed several podiatrists. “They loved their job and I saw they were able to get people back to the things they loved doing,” said Dr. Yau, who served a three-year comprehensive surgical residency at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Yau also served a rotation at the International Center for Limb Lengthening/Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthotics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. There, he learned how to treat clubfoot, as well as other foot and ankle deformities.
Now, playing an integral role at the University Foot and Ankle Institute, Dr. Yau’s primary focus is helping diabetic patients avoid amputation through correction of deformities and wound healing. He also treats various sports injuries, including sprains, arthritis and fractures.
Originally from Toronto, Dr. Yau received his initial medical training at Temple University in Philadelphia. He specialized in diabetic limb salvage, sports medicine, foot and ankle reconstruction and trauma. He completed his surgical reconstruction fellowship with the University Foot and Ankle Institute, one of only a few fellowships recognized by the American College Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Dr. Yau spends his free time with his wife, enjoying traveling, trying new foods and restaurants, hiking, snowboarding, and playing softball.
