Physical therapy is part-and-parcel to a successful treatment plan. UFAI Valencia makes PT easily accessible with an on-site physical therapy clinic.
We offer some of the nation’s top physical therapists, like Suzanne Hawson, PT, MPT, OCS, proudly serving every type of patient: from seasoned athletic professionals, to weekend warriors, and everyone in-between.
Dr. Justin Franson isn’t shy about his love for working with patients, and it shows in his work! “I love being able to provide true relief for the physical problems that people come see me about. I am one of those people who truly enjoy the personal interactions with my patients.”
During his time at Brigham Young University, Dr. Franson ditched his accounting books to pursue his passion - physical therapy. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree, he decided to take his interest in the specialized needs of athletes to the next level. His admiration for the complexities of the foot and ankle brought him to North Chicago, where he attended the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.
Upon graduation in 2001, Franson accepted a three-year residency program at the Greater Los Angeles VA and UCLA County Hospital. He spent much of his residency-training program in the hospital, providing services in the clinics and emergency room as well as the operating room.
Dr. Franson expertise ranges from sports injuries such as ankle sprains and foot and ankle fractures to arthritis treatments to total ankle replacement. He loves to treat athletes and has a special place in his heart (and feet) for weekend warriors like himself.
Dr. Tanler Volkmann began his medical studies at Seattle University and The Evergreen State College, where he played on the men’s soccer team. A budding medical professional, he studied political economy and pre-med, and worked his way through school as a medical assistant.
During a brief tenure as an orthopaedic technologist at the athletic department at San Diego State University, Dr.Volkmann learned the fascinating intricacies of foot and ankle surgery, which inspired him to pursue a career in the field. “I realized I could continue to treat athletes and work within a unique specialty that could influence people’s daily health and happiness,” he says.
His next academic stop was Washington DC where he completed a post-bacc in biological and chemical sciences at American University, then off to the Big Apple to earn his DPM at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
Serving as chief resident, Dr. Volkmann completed a three-year surgical residency program in Los Angeles through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. There, he was trained in all manners of foot and ankle care, although he took a special interest in sports medicine and surgical management.
Dr. Syndey Yau first studied medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he specialized in sports medicine, foot and ankle reconstruction and trauma, and diabetic limb salvage. He then served a three-year comprehensive surgical residency at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
During his residency, Dr. Yau spent one rotation at the International Center for Limb Lengthening/Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthotics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. There, he learned how to treat clubfoot, limb-length discrepancies, and other foot and ankle deformities.
He completed his surgical reconstruction fellowship with us here at the University Foot and Ankle Institute, Santa Monica branch, which we are proud to say is one of only a handful of fellowships recognized by the American College Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Hailing from Toronto, Dr. Yau speaks three languages – English, French, and Cantonese – and loves to travel. In addition to his surgical and linguistic talents, he’s also an accomplished athlete himself. He and his wife enjoy softball, hiking, and snowboarding in their free time.
University Foot and Ankle Institute is nationally recognized as among the very best Podiatrists and Foot and Ankle Surgeons in the nation.
