Achilles Tendonitis

Updated 8/21/2018
Dr. Baravarian discusses Achilles tendonitis.

What is Achillies Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon. It's often the result of a repetitive motion or overuse of the tendon and develops over time. Rarely is it the result of a direct injury.

Patients often report a mild ache in the lower region of the calf or above the heel after activity. There may be tenderness or stiffness after rest or the tendon may be swollen, painful to touch and standing on your toes may be difficult.

Our physicians specialize in the treatment of all Achilles tendon injuries. They have decades of experience and all of the state-of-the-art technologies at their disposal to properly diagnose and treat Achilles tendonitis, tendinosis and tears.

Common Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment, University Foot and Ankle Institute
  • Sudden increase in the intensity of activity

  • Tight calf muscles
  • Running too often or running on hard surface
  • Sudden increase it the distance of running or walking
  • Jumping a lot (as ones does in basketball)
  • Wearing shoes without proper support

Conservative Achilles Tendonitis Treatments

  • Orthotics
  • Stretching

  • Physical therapy (to strengthen the Achilles)

  • Decreasing activity That stresses the tendon

  • Brace or boot to immobilize the tendon during the healing

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and inflammation in the tendon

Sometimes conservative treatments are just not enough and a more aggressive treatment plan is needed. While tendonitis is easily treated, if misdiagnosed or ignored, further and more permanent damage can occur.

Advanced Non-invasive Achilles Tendonitis Treatments

Achilles Tendon Treatment Options, Podiatry Today
UFAI's Dr. Baravarian discussing Achilles tendon treatment in Podiatry Today.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

In this treatment the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma is injected into the affected tendon. The growth factors in the platelets spur healing and recovery.

Topaz

The Topaz Procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that is done in the operating room. Small holes are made in the tendon to stimulate the body to send growth factors to help heal the tendon and to reduce scar tissue.

Tenex

Tenex uses ultrasonic energy that targets scarred and damaged tissue and breaks it down without disturbing the surrounding healthy tissue.

Stem Cell Therapy

Patients own stem cells are injected into the damaged region of the Achilles where they quickly begin to multiply. These regenerative stem cells are responsible for regenerating and rebuilding the body. This treatment is well tolerated and virtually pain-free.
