Tenex for Achilles Tendon Injuries

Tenex - University Foot and Ankle Institute

If you’re one of 8 million Americans experiencing pain and discomfort in the Achilles tendon or plantar fascia, the Tenex Health Procedure,  a minimally invasive treatment for soft tissue damage, may help.

Developed with Mayo Clinic, Tenex uses very precise microscopic cutting and removes the diseased tissue. When tissue is unhealthy, blood flow is reduced and healing is impaired, if not halted.

Tenex is done in our offices with local anesthetic or a surgery center with mild sedation. It's covered by most insurance plans. After the procedure, a small bandage closes the miniscule incision.

Causes of Fascia or Tendon Pain

Your tendon or fascia that may be causing pain is actually soft tissue that connects muscle to the bone. Often a tendon or fascia is sore because it’s been overused during day-to-day activities, sports or repetitive movements. Sometimes, a trip, fall or twist can cause pain in the tendon.

The problem is that injuries cause scar tissue to form. Internal scar tissue build-up causes pain, which can also limit the range of motion and movement.

What to Expect During the Tenex Procedure

Tenex - University Foot and Ankle Institute

University Foot and Ankle Institute doctors use a diagnostic ultrasound to pinpoint the exact area(s) of scar tissue. The ultrasound uses a specific frequency that, with a specially trained doctor or technician, can locate the difference between healthy tissue and scar tissue.

The actual Tenex Procedure usually takes only about 15 minutes. Afterward, there can be minor swelling.

Recovery time is greatly reduced from several months (with traditional surgery) to one to two weeks with Tenex. In most cases, you can begin light weight-bearing exercise within two weeks.

The TenJet System: a new and better alternative to Tenex?

Through water jet technology, the Tenjet Hydrocision system very easily breaks down and removes scar formation via negative pressure. The Tenex system, on the other hand, uses a blade that is passed back and forth to break up the scar tissue. This makes the Tenex system far inferior because it also breaks down the good tissue as the probe is passed back and forth. Tenjet water jet system only breaks down the damaged and scarred tissue allowing for less trauma and improved healing capability of the region.

University Foot and Ankle Institute stands on the forefront of this exciting new procedure. Our doctors maximize every traditional and advanced technological modality to safely heal your foot and ankle challenges.
