If You’re Suffering With Foot and Heel Pain, Don’t Ignore It.

If you re suffering with foot and heel pain, do not ignore it. Plantar fasciitis

When your car starts making scary noises, one tempting response is to turn up the radio. Ignore it, give it some time, it will probably go away, right? Unfortunately, this response will often leave you calling a tow truck for a problem that could have been readily fixed, if it had only received prompt attention.

The same principle applies to foot problems. Remember that foot pain is not normal. In fact, it’s a signal of abnormality. Foot pain is not something you address with a stoic stiff upper lip, or just grin and bear. Recurrent foot pain can be fixed. But that’s not going to happen without podiatric treatment.

Some very mild sprains and bruises are amenable to home treatment. But most persistent problems require professional podiatric intervention.

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of chronic heel pain

As one representative example, take severe heel pain in the morning. The first steps you take each morning cause sharp shooting pains in your heel. The pains go away after a while, but they come back after long periods of standing, or after you stand up from a sitting position. You probably have plantar fasciitis. It’s the most common cause of chronic heel pain.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

The excruciating pain of plantar fasciitis occurs when repetitive overuse causes micro-tears and inflammation of the plantar fascia, the strong web of ligament that runs along the bottom of your foot. Other factors that contribute to plantar fasciitis are abnormal bone structure in the foot, obesity, and flat feet.

The fact that the pain of plantar fasciitis usually subsides somewhat after you launch into your daily routine is deceptive. It can make you think that, given enough time, plantar fasciitis will permanently heal all by itself. But wishing and hoping it will go away on its own won’t do anything at all for plantar fasciitis. Left untreated over time, it will get worse, not better.

Conservative care for heel pain relief

Our first course of treatment for plantar fasciitis is conservative care. Most of our patients find heel pain relief with a combination of stretching exercises for plantar fasciitis, orthotics, ice, heat and night splints. Less than 5% need advanced treatment and less than 2% require surgery.

Chronic heel pain may continue to be a problem. This is often due to reduced blood flow to the damaged tissue in the heel and scar formation. Advanced therapies are available to help remedy recalcitrant heel pain.

How to treat plantar fasciitis with advanced therapies?

These treatment options are typically used on chronic cases where plantar fasciitis symptoms have lasted more than six months.

  • Platelet rich plasma therapy, which causes the body’s own healing system to jumpstart the recovery process.
Tenjet is one of the treatment options to alleviate plantar fasciits pain.

  • Stem cell therapy, including amniotic stem cell therapy. We collect powerful healing cells from your blood and apply them directly to the plantar fascia.
  • Micro-debridement, a minimally invasive 20-minute surgical process that breaks up scar tissue and generates healthy blood flow into the plantar fascia.
  • The TenJet system, which focuses a high-pressure stream of saline solution directly into the damaged fascia tissue. The damaged tissue is washed out, while the healthy tissue is left intact.
  • Shockwave Therapy, which uses electromagnetic waves to break down the injured tissue and start the regenerative process.
  • Dysport injections. Like Botox, this uses a nerve block agent to relax the fascia and dispel your pain.

Plantar fasciitis is only one example of the many foot problems that can be counted on to get worse without treatment.

These advanced treatments are not home remedies. They’re not available without a visit to a podiatrist. Indeed, very few podiatric practices provide the full array of treatment modalities available at University Foot and Ankle Institute.

You can be certain the care providers of UFAI will begin your treatment with the most appropriate, most conservative, least painful, and least invasive therapies. While advanced surgical techniques are available at UFAI, surgery is always a last resort.
